I remember people having this same issue with Big Hero 6.
A lot of fans did not like that Hiro and Tadashi were portrayed as being mixed race. It’s like these studios are pretending to give us diversity but instead of going all in, they throw us this whitewashed, mixed race mess. No. Go all in. All or nothing. This isn’t real diversity. This is so big film execs can pat themselves on the back and all-white fandoms can feel good about how ‘diverse’ they are. Stop it.
Fun Fact: Mixed race kids actually exist. And more and more kids are born belonging to two or more races every day because of how many different races exist in America and the fact that interracial couples are becoming more widely accepted.
A lot of those mixed race kids will grow up being told that they’re not black/asian/hispanic enough because they’re half white or half something else. They’ll be teased and mocked for taking part in their own culture because they’re “only half”. They might even receive negative treatment from one or both sides of their extended family because of what race the other side of their family is.
More and more interracial couples are getting married in the US. More and more mixed race kids are being born. People need to learn to start understanding that being mixed race doesn’t make you “not enough”. Mixed race kids are both and they are neither. And they are becoming the norm.
You think being mixed race isn’t real diversity? I am half Italian, half Puerto Rican. I grew up with two incredibly different, vibrant cultures in my household. I listened to Pavarotti in my dad’s car and Salsa music in my mom’s. For dinner, we eat my abuelita’s arroz con gandules and my bisnonna’s homemade spaghetti. To me, being half and half is incredible. I got to experience an entire culture that I would’ve never learned about if I’d been only Italian or only Puerto Rican.
When a character is mixed race they are not more and they’re not less. They are who they are. People thinking that mixed race characters/families are less important than single race characters/families is incredibly ignorant as well as harmful to the many mixed race children in the world who will grow up thinking that they are worth less than their single race friends.

Amelia y Manuel veían una película mientras descansaban encima de la cama. Era un día flojo, ideal para quedarse en casa. Afuera había una tormenta, el cielo estaba lleno de nubes oscuras que se iluminaban de vez en cuando por los relámpagos. La pareja hizo caso omiso a la naturaleza y conversaba sobre los acontecimientos que ocurrían en el film.
En un momento, en medio de la trama, un rayo cayó justo fuera de su hogar. El dormitorio se llenó de un resplandeciente fulgor. Se miraron con cara de sorpresa y Manuel, en un ataque de ternura, tomó la sábana y la tiró encima de su compañera mientras gritaba “¡un rayo! ¡no temas!”… Ella reía sin control, exclamando luego de un respiro: ¡sálvame Manuel! ¡qué miedo, un rayo!”.
Las risas se volvieron protagonistas de la escena. Amelia comenzó a moverse mientras gritaba “te haré una llave de judo para que me sueltes”. Sus intentos por girar a su novio y quedar en control de la situación eran evidentes, mas no lograba mover a su compañero.
Sorprendido Manuel la miró y le preguntó: “¿sabes judo?”. Con una cara seria Amelia respondió “no, pero lo intentaré, sólo quiero que te des vuelta y te quedes a mi lado”. El toque de ternura fue efectivo, él se dejó vencer y siguió su juego: “pues funcionó”, dijo interpretando el rol de vencido.
Ella le besó el cuello y le dice: “estás muy arriba, no alcanzo tu mejilla”. Él la miró con un gesto tierno y le sonrió mientras besaba su frente. Ella se aferró a su cintura y él acariciaba su pelo suavemente. Ese momento de calma fue interrumpido por unas inesperadas cosquillas. “Lo siento, fue inevitable”, dijo la chica con cara de traviesa. “Soy cosquilloso sólo en algunas partes”, respondió Manuel con un tono retador. “Pues las descubriré”, le contestó la chica mientras intentaba encontrar el punto débil de su amado.
Él tomó sus manos, llenándola de besos. Ella reía como hace tiempo no lo hacía, con una risa cantarina y muy dulce. Intentó ponerse seria, pero le fue imposible. Él siguió recorriendo su cuerpo con besos y caricias. ¿De qué te ríes tanto?, preguntó mientras besaba coquetamente una de las comisuras de sus labios. “No te diré”, le dijo sonriendo. “Dime”, le pidió besándola nuevamente. “No”, respondió ella y le besó la punta de la nariz.
La escena no podía ser más linda, ambos estaban pasando un lindo momento. Luego de una pausa, en un momento de reflexión, Manuel rompió el silencio: “Espero que no te estés riendo de mí…”. Amelia puso cara de seriedad y le dijo: “Hablemos en serio…”. Manuel la miró sin saber qué esperar. “…¿podrías correrte un poquito que me aplastas y me quitas el aire?”
Ambos se largaron a reír, juntos eran realmente felices.
